Description

The Ford Tri-Motor was an all-metal, three-engine transport plane that became popular because of its ability to provide comfortable and reliable passenger service. The Tri-Motor revolutionized commercial aviation, and was modified for military applications as well. It was flown by Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, among others. The first commercial flight over the Rockies was made in a Tri-Motor, and such flights enhanced its reputation for strength and dependability. There were only 199 Tri-Motors produced between 1926 and 1933, and one is on display in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.
