Texaco Latin American Tugboat

The Little Boat that Could… And Did!
The Texaco Latin American, was a 850 hp vessel equipped with two 500 pound anchors and an 18 person lifeboat, this aprox. 168 ton tug could operate at an average sea speed of 10.5 knots and had a steaming radius of nearly 1500 miles. Built around the turn of the century and delivered to The Texas Company, the Latin American was one “tough tug” with a history of not only hard work, but valiant victories and selfless service. In the Hudson River Tugboat Race of 1952, the top finisher was the steam vessel Latin American, operating for the Texas Company. On June 16, 1966, two fuel tankers collided. The Latin American came to their assistance. Within minutes an explosion ignited the flammable gas and flames engulfed the ships. The Latin American, as usual, stayed “on-the job” and unfortunately, but proudly met her demise.
